Diabetes Screening

On a recent visit, I followed around Dr. Christine Jeffries-Stokes who is the doctor that started the Western Desert Kidney Project.  4 years ago, when I first came to Laverton, I volunteered with her during one of her diabetes awareness events.  It was actually that volunteer experience that gave me the whole idea for this project in the first place.  So, it was good to talk to her again as she is a textbook of information about Aboriginal diabetes.

Her program has caused a 20% drop in kidney disease rates in towns where it has been introduced.  She isn’t about just throwing money at the situation but rather educating through traditional forms such as art and song.  I only had a day with her but I hope to get reconnected with her again soon.

Dr. Christine Jeffries-Stokes examines Beniah Brooks during a pediatric medical clinic held in Leonora, Western Australia.  Among other things, Stokes looks for signs of ear and skin infections which can indirectly lead to a higher risk of kidney disease when the child grows up.  She says it is a very common problem as 70% of Aboriginal school children have ear infections.

School children at Mt. Margaret Remote Community School wait to have their urine tested during a diabetes screening clinic.  With Type II diabetes showing up in children as young as 10, early detection can catch and prevent the disease from getting out of control.

Urine samples are tested for the early indicators of kidney disease including acidity.  More acid in the urine can indicate that the kidneys are stressed and can lead to decreased cell life in the renal system.

Doctors check for ear and skin infections at Mt. Margaret Remote Community School during a diabetes screening clinic.  Doctors believe that high incidences of infections can actually indirectly lead to a higher risk of kidney disease when the child grows up.

To promote healthy eating at a young age, schools like the Mt. Margaret Remote Community School give out healthy fruit as a snack during recess.
